The history of Sacred Heart Church in Brown City begins with the founding of Saint Mary’s of Burnside in the mid 1800’s. By the mid 1890’s, the number of parishioners at St. Mary’s had grown to the point where a new parish became necessary. Brown City was selected as the site for the new church. The first church was built in Brown City in 1897.
Father Esper was pastor of both St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart from 1897 to 1904. For the next nine years each church had its own pastor. Fr. Esper moved into the rectory in Brown City to become the pastor of Sacred Heart until 1910 when he was succeeded by Fr. Wittman. In 1913, Fr. Gaffney was appointed pastor of St. Mary’s and again united Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s under one pastor. That unity had continued until 2003.
In the late 1990’s, it became apparent that a new building was required for Sacred Heart. A delegation from Sacred Heart met with representatives from the Archdiocese of Detroit to obtain permission to start a building fund and to build a new church. That permission was granted in a letter dated April 13, 2000.
The building fund was set up and contributions were being set aside for the new building. In 2003, a new urgency became evident when the vicariate that included Sacred Heart, voted to close Sacred Heart in a restructuring effort. Having become aware of that vote, Glenn Kreiner and Mike Lents began to work with the vicariate to reverse their recommendation to the Archdiocese. Finally, in 2005, that vote was reversed and the vicariate named Sacred Heart of Brown City the growth parish in our area with a recommendation to the Archdiocese to support our building project. At this time, the Archdiocese had increased the necessary funding requirement to 100 before approval would be granted. The Brown City Sacred Heart Community along with its friends rose to accept that challenge with the result being the new Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Brown City, Michigan located at 7090 Cade Rd.
