The founding of St. Mary's of Burnside began in 1855 with some early settlers in this part of Michigan. After building their homes, several settlers located a priest that was willing to travel to the area, Father Charles Chambille, from the Swan Creek Settlement in St. Clair county, now known as Anchorville.
     Fr. Chambille celebrated Mass for several years starting in the Hubbard Kriener home until the fall of 1856 when a log cabin dedicated to Our Blessed Mother was built on the westside of Burnside and simply named, "St. Mary's".
     By the year 1877, the growing numbers of parishioners made it necessary to build a second church that would seat 500 (due to some changes, it currently seats 400). Our present church was built on the Eastside of Burnside a little north of the origional log cabin location. 
     With the encouragement of Fr. Theophilus Buyse a little rectory was built near the church in 1860. This way, visiting priests would have a place to stay when they came to St. Mary's. Today, a remodled St. Mary's Rectory is still being used.
